Medicare
Medicare is health insurance for people 65 or older. You may be eligible to get Medicare earlier if you have a disability.
Some people get Medicare automatically, others have to actively sign up -- it depends if you start getting retirement or disability benefits from Social Security before you turn 65.
Please see the Medicare website for more details.CHOICES (Medicare Counseling)
Social Services has staff and volunteers who are CHOICES certified counselors, having been trained by the Area Agency on Aging and Center for Medicare Advocacy in order to better serve senior residents. CHOICES counselors keep as up-to-date as possible with the ever-changing medical insurance field, as well as keeping current information about resources for medical care and medical insurance coverage. The CHOICES counselors do not sell insurance, nor do they decide which plan is the best for someone – they do, however, provide the information and tools to assist someone in making a choice. They are also available to help complete applications, especially for the state and federal programs. Once the coverage is in place, they will advocate for clients, if necessary, in order to obtain the benefits to which they are entitled. If none of the following programs are appropriate, the social worker can help look for other funding sources.State–Administered Programs
