Grade 5
Classes for Campers Entering Grade 5
There are over 40 different classes offered at the Music & Arts Camp! Please see full descriptions below. Please note not all classes are offered for all grades.
During the registration process, you will be required to fill out a form choosing your child's classes they would like to take. The Camp Director will schedule campers for as many of their first-choice classes as possible. Please keep in mind that it may not be possible to get all first-choice selections.
Schedules will be emailed to parents in mid-May.

(NOTE: Class selection forms become valid once you register for the Music and Arts program)
Registration for camp begins March 10th at 8:00 a.m. for residents, and March 24th at 8:00 a.m. for non-residents.
Art Classes are double periods (1 hour). A smock and/or other minor recycled or nature items might be needed for class and may be stored in the art rooms. A list will be available on the website in early June and to your child on the first day of camp. Campers who are absent will be unable to make up the projects missed during their absence. Food Decorating will be a single period class.
All art classes listed below will allow the opportunity to participate in the art show.
PASSPORT TO WORLD ART
Grades 3-5
Fasten your seatbelts and get ready to travel to different countries creating projects inspired by art in each country's origin. Each time we "land" in a country we'll get a stamp in the personalized passports we make on the first day of camp. Campers will enjoy using various art materials such as paint, clay and fabric to create unique and personal artwork.
CARTOONING BASICS AND BEYOND!
Grades 3-5
Learn the basics of cartooning, creating characters and writing/illustrating simple comic strips/cartoons!
CREATING PUPPETS
Grades 3-5
Kids will learn how to design, construct, and manipulate puppet characters, focusing on different styles of puppetry each week.
DRAWING & PAINTING
Grades 4-6
In this engaging and varied workshop, campers will have the opportunity to make several projects that develop and strengthen basic observational and drawing skills, before moving on to explore various painting styles and media. This includes pencil, colored pencil, ink, pastels, watercolor, and even acrylic paint on canvas! Participants will be able to express their unique creativity and ideas through the visual mediums of drawing and painting.
FOOD DECORATING I
Grades 5-9
In this fast paced 30-minute class, learn a broad set of decorating techniques and develop skills you can use for all your decorating projects from cookies to cupcakes to cakes. Campers will not eat during class but may bring home some of their treats. Single Period Class
FUN WITH CLAY
Grades 3-5
An introduction to clay class, projects will include simple clay projects to be painted. Class will also include work with modeling clay.
SCULPTURE
Grades 4-9
Projects may include working with wire, paper, paper mache, plaster and wood to create masterpieces that may include puppets, sculptures and masks.
MARVELOUS MURAL COLLABORATIONS
Grades 3-9
Artists will join together to draw and paint murals while learning about a specific artist and the style that inspires these projects! Campers will also create individual projects during this class to take home!
All classes to play in the final performance are noted with a (P).
CLASSROOM MUSIC COURSES
A wide variety of music classes are offered, giving campers an opportunity to explore and have fun with music. These are single period classes that meet for 1/2 hour.
MUSICAL ENSEMBLES/INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC LESSONS
Campers are responsible for providing their own instruments. Instructors can provide information regarding instrument rental or purchase. Campers should bring their school method book for lessons. This information will also be available online in late May or early June. Campers who anticipate being absent during the final week of camp should not plan to be part of an ensemble. The band, jazz band and orchestra will perform in the final concert.
BAND (P)
Grades 5-9
Designed for campers with a minimum of 2 years training on their band instrument. Campers with only 1 year may join with the permission of the camp director but MUST take an instrumental lesson.
GARAGE BAND
Grades 5-9
Campers will have the opportunity to use a powerful and exciting music software program. This fun-filled class offers students the chance to create music and instantly hear the results. A wide variety of musical concepts will be covered including composing, sampling, recording, and performing.
WOOD & BRASS INSTRUMENT MUSIC LESSONS
Grades 5-9
Designed for woodwind and brass instrument players with one or two years of school lessons that wish to continue with group lessons during the summer. On the registration form, please indicate which instrument you will be playing.
PERCUSSION
Grades 4-9
This is for campers who have never played a percussion instrument before. Campers will learn the basics of snare drum playing but additional percussion instruments may be introduced. Campers will need to provide “concert snare” drumsticks and an 8” tunable practice pad similar to a Remo brand.
PIANO II
Grades 5-9
This class is designed for campers who have one or more years of private or group piano instruction. Self-paced study is encouraged. Campers who are just beginning instruction must buy the teacher designated method book after the first class. Campers who are taking private lessons should bring their own lesson book. Campers will need to provide their own wired headphones. Adapters are provided.
ORCHESTRA (P)
Grades 5-9
Designed as a large ensemble experience for string players with a minimum of 2 years training on their instrument. Campers with less than 2 years may join with the permission of the camp director but MUST take a strings lesson class at camp.
BEGINNING STRINGS LESSON
Grades 4-6
Designed for campers with no experience who wish to start playing the violin, viola, cello, or bass during the summer. Campers will need to bring their own instrument. Please indicate the instrument that will be studying when registering (violin, viola, cello, or bass).
STRINGS LESSON I
Grades 5-9
Small group lessons on string instruments (violin, viola, cello, or bass). Lessons are geared for campers who have at least one year of string lesson instruction. Campers will need to provide their own instrument.
SONG & MUSIC WRITING
Grades 5-9
In this class campers will be writing and recording their own songs. Campers will learn about song structure, rhyming schemes, lyric writing, techniques for creating mood in music, as well as stylistic elements to enhance their compositions. Campers will be using the Garage Band program on iPads to write and record their ideas. Music reading skills will help but are not required for this fun and exciting class.
UKELELE
Grades 4-9
Learn how to play this popular Hawaiian instrument that is a member of the guitar family. Campers must supply their own ukulele.
WORLD MUSIC
Grades 3-6
An exciting course allowing the younger campers to explore various musical activities from multiple different cultures. Activities will include rhythmic games, singing, drumming, discovery of instruments and more.
CHOIR (P)
Grades 3-9
For all students who enjoy singing! Choir classes will learn a variety of songs including our traditional camp song “I am a Child”.
STEEL PAN DRUMMING
Grades 5-9
Experience the vibrant sounds of Trinidad and Tobago right here in Glastonbury! In this engaging class, you'll learn to play the steel drums (pans) and explore the rhythmic, breezy melodies of island music. No experience necessary—just bring your enthusiasm for fun and unique musical expression!
All classes to perform in the final performance are noted with a (P).
Single period course that meets for 1/2 hour. Please note the level requirements. The instructor has the right to group classes by ability levels.
RHYTHM AND BEATS
Grades 3-5
Step into the world of dance with this fun and supportive beginner class! Learn basic steps and techniques across a variety of styles while building confidence, coordination and a love for movement. No experience needed!
WORLD DANCE
Grades 3-9
Travel the globe through dance in this high-energy class! Explore different cultural dance styles, from Latin and African rhythms to Bollywood and beyond, while improving coordination and having fun. No experience needed!
FOLK DANCE
Grades 3-9
Dance your way around the world! Have fun in an active class where campers learn the folk dances of various cultures from around the globe. No experience needed!
BEGINNGER HIP-HOP
Grades 3-5
If you have high energy and love/want to learn to dance, come learn hip-hop! In this beginner-level hip hop class, no previous hip-hop or dance experience is necessary! Every class will start off with a stretch and high energy warm-up. We will be learning different hip-hop moves like pops, isolations, and sharp movements. Come into every class with that high energy and get ready to dance to some fun and upbeat music!
INTERMEDIATE HIP-HOP (P)
Grades 3-9
If you have high energy and previous dance or hip-hop experience then this is the perfect class for you! This is an intermediate-level hip-hop class that will require high focus, and challenge you to strengthen your hip-hop skills. Each class will start off with a high energy warm-up to work on those pops, isolations and sharp movements. We will learn some short hip-hop combinations as well as an intermediate level routine. Bring that high-energy and focus into every class and get ready to dance to some fun and upbeat music!
ADVANCED HIP-HOP (P)
Grades 5-9
This advanced-level hip hop class continues to teach you how to coordinate strong high-energy movements, pops and isolations with popular music. Previous dance or hip-hop experience is required. This class will challenge you to learn and master choreography at a faster pace while focusing on rhythm, musicality and encouraging individual style! The fierce and upbeat routine we learn will be performed at the camp showcase!
All classes to be included in the final performance are noted with a (P).
Single period courses that meet for 1/2 hour. From stage to screen there is something for anyone who loves to perform. Introductory classes are available for younger campers and classes that focus on specific skills are offered to older campers.
IMPROV
Grades 5-9
No script, No problem! Improvisation is the practice of acting, singing, talking and reacting in the moment, without preparation, and it can get pretty silly when you are challenged to be a hard rock band singing about babies. Drew Carey made this type of comedy famous with "Whose Line Is It Anyway" and now it's your turn to give it a try. In this class you will learn the fundamentals of the art of improv as well as comedy basics.
LITTLE SHOWSTOPPERS (P)
Grades 3-5
This class will introduce your little star to the three elements of great musical theater performance: singing, acting, and dancing. Campers will learn to project their voices with healthy technique, perform with expression, and dance as an ensemble in the context of a song from a real Broadway show.
A SWIFTIE MINI MUSICAL (P)
Grades 3-5
Get ready to step into the spotlight and into a world of storytelling while dancing to Taylor Swift's biggest hits. This is where your very own dreams of being a pop star come true! Let your creativity and self-expression shine as you work collaboratively with your peers to create your very own Swifie Mini Musical! Come unleash your inner Swiftie!
YOUNG ACTORS WORKSHOP
Grades 3-5
This is a basic acting course that includes a general introduction to theatre and acting techniques, giving campers the opportunity to perform in front of their peers. Classes will include theater games as well as class exercises in acting fundamentals such as movement and voice.
Music & Arts classes are the focus of this camp. Recreation Classes are designed to give campers a chance to be active during their morning of classes.
RECESS FUN & TEAM BUILDING
Grades 5-9
Play team building games to get to know your fellow campers and then practice teamwork to accomplish the challenge you are given that day. Challenges may include obstacle courses, scavenger hunts, and cooperative games. Be prepared to be creative and exercise your mind as well as your body.
GAMES, CHALLENGES AND LAUGHTER, OH MY!
Grades 3-5
Burn some energy playing your favorite games from PE and learn a bunch of new ones. Class will include cooperative games, traditional sports, and outdoor games.
WORLD GAMES
Grades 5-9
Have fun and be active while learning sports and games from around the world.
